At its heart, Drama is about developing tolerance and empathy”

We in the music and drama department are incredibly excited this year to not only offer a full provision of Drama across the key stages, but also the exciting opportunities to see live theatre once again.  It’s been a challenging and uncertain time for many, with little space for social interactions.  Many have been left feeling isolated and cut off from their communities.  This has had a massive impact on our young people, who more than anyone need to feel part of something.  It is through the arts that these connections can be made; where students can explore emotional and moral domains in a safe space.

Our first trip out saw us travelling back in time to see ‘Back to the Future the musical’.  Despite the fact that the first movie came out in 1985 (a terrifying 36 years ago), most students seemed to have watched all three films and have a better working knowledge of the plot than me!  With a stunning set, which saw the Delorean do a full 360 turn in the air, realistic costumes which celebrated the 80s and 50s in style, some really catchy tunes and a lot of comedy, the students were able to experience something really special.

But putting aside the sensory experience that the show offered, there was something much deeper at work.  The script delt with themes such as bullying and the difficulties of growing up.  The take home message was that of perseverance and never giving up on a dream.  Our students got to experience this together, as part of a group, a community who cares about their future and their dreams.  They are not alone and now more than ever that message needs to be heard.
