Dr Eric Thomas from Detroit in the USA delivered a motivational assembly to the whole school on the morning of 26th September. He started with the message that students should not accept the life they had – but to be aspirational and ambitious.
Dr Thomas’s message included a narrative of his own life with its humble origins: being born to a teenage mother, dropping out of school and ending up in a desperate situation. His resilience and determination drew him out of poverty and into education where, following years of study, he attained a first degree at university and later on his PhD. He now makes a living working with sports stars and celebrities and delivering motivational speeches.
Addressing students individually and collectively, his charismatic style inspired the whole school population to be motivated to challenge themselves. Convincing and infectious, the message to the community was to reach for the stars.
