Product Design

KS3

All students study Product Design at KS3. Through the various projects they will learn how to design and make products using wood, metal, plastic, paper and card. They will also learn about Smart Materials. In their work they will use structures, mechanics, electronics and CAD/CAM and will develop an understanding of how products are manufactured and packaged.

Y7 and Y8

Students in Years 7 and 8 follow a programme of study which includes:

  • A simple wooden game.
  • Product packaging.
  • A mechanical toy.
  • Structures.
  • A wooden box [to include an electronic circuit]

KS4

Product Design is an option subject which students may choose to study at GCSE level commencing in Y9. It is made up of 60% Controlled Assessment and 40% Written Exam. The Controlled Assessment consists of a Design and Make project. The written exam is split into two parts, the first testing students’ designing skills and the second their knowledge of materials and processes.

Y9

Students in Year 9 follow a programme of study which includes:

  • Developing knowledge of materials and processes
  • Learning how to accurately mark out, join and finish work
  • A design and make project

Y10

Students in Year 10 follow a programme of study which includes:

  • Further development of knowledge of materials and processes
  • Further development of designing skills
  • Controlled Assessment. This consists of a design and make project.

Y11

Students in Year 11 follow a programme of study which includes:

  • Completion of Controlled Assessment
  • Revising and testing knowledge of materials and processes through exam questions
  • Preparation for the design section of the exam
