Food Technology

KS3

All students study Food Technology in Years 7 and 8 as part of an introduction to the wider curriculum of the Academy.

Y7

Students in Year 7 follow a programme of study which includes:

  • Health and safety in the kitchen
  • Healthy Eating
  • Basic cookery skills

Y8

Students in Year 8 follow a programme of study which includes:

  • Working safely and hygienically in the kitchen
  • Recipe adaptation and modification
  • Further development of cookery skills

KS4

Food Technology is an option subject at KS4 which students may choose to study at GCSE level commencing in Y9. It is made up of 60% Controlled Assessment and 40% written examination. The controlled Assessment consists of a Design and Make project. As a largely practical subject, Food Technology requires the application of knowledge and understanding when undertaking market research, developing ideas, producing products, designing labelling and packaging.

Y9

Students in Year 9 follow a programme of study which includes:

  • Food
  • Nutrition
  • Health and safety

Y10

Students in Year 10 follow a programme of study which includes:

  • Understanding the importance of systems and controls when making food
  • Food materials and components
  • Food processes
  • Industrial manufacture – batch production
  • Freezing/storage techniques
  • Sensory analysis and evaluation
  • Pupils using recipe books to create ideas (food around the world)

Y11

Students in Year 11 follow a programme of study which includes:

  • Completion of controlled assessment
  • Preparation for the written examination
